Web design, from scratch.

A structured path through what actually matters

A lot of people start learning web design and get stuck somewhere between tutorials and actual projects. This program is built around that gap — giving you the knowledge and context to make real decisions, not just follow steps.

What the program covers

Six modules, each focused on a specific area. You move through them in order — later modules assume you understand earlier ones, which keeps everything connected.

Module 01

How browsers think

Before you design anything, it helps to understand what you're designing for. We cover how browsers render pages and why that matters for your decisions.

  • DOM and rendering pipeline basics
  • Box model and document flow
  • Why fonts load differently on devices
Module 02

Visual foundations

Color, spacing, and typography — the three things that determine whether a design looks considered or rushed. We work through each with real examples.

  • Building a workable color palette
  • Type scales and when to break them
  • Whitespace as a design tool
Module 03

Layout and structure

CSS Grid and Flexbox are the main tools here. We focus on choosing the right one for the situation rather than memorising syntax.

  • When grid beats flexbox (and vice versa)
  • Responsive layouts without media query chaos
  • Handling edge cases in real content
Module 04

Components and reuse

How to build things that work once and work everywhere — buttons, cards, navigation, forms. Naming conventions and structure that stay manageable.

  • Component thinking without a framework
  • CSS custom properties for consistency
  • Practical BEM usage (not strict, just useful)
Module 05

Interaction and motion

Transitions and animations that actually improve usability rather than just look clever. We look at where motion adds meaning and where it distracts.

  • CSS transitions for state changes
  • Keyframe animations for guided attention
  • Performance basics — what costs what
Module 06

From design to delivery

Bridging the gap between a finished design and a working page. Covers file handoff, asset preparation, and working with feedback from clients or teammates.

  • Exporting assets correctly (SVG, PNG, WebP)
  • Writing clear design specs
  • Giving and receiving useful critique

Two ways to learn

Some people work better in a group. Others need to set their own pace. We run both — and you can switch between them if your situation changes.

Group sessions

Small cohorts of up to 8 people. You work through the same modules at the same pace, which means you can compare approaches and ask questions during live sessions.

  • Live sessions twice a week, 90 minutes each
  • Group critiques after each module project
  • Shared feedback channel between sessions
  • Works well if you prefer structured accountability

Individual sessions

One-on-one with your instructor. You still follow the same curriculum, but the pace and focus adjust to where you actually are — not where the group is.

  • Sessions scheduled around your availability
  • Direct feedback on your specific projects
  • Option to pause and revisit any topic
  • Useful if you have a specific skill gap to address

A few people who've been through it

These are students from recent cohorts. No curated highlights — just what they found useful and what was harder than expected.

The layout module took me two extra weeks because I kept trying to make flexbox do what grid was built for. Once that clicked, I moved through everything much faster. The instructor didn't rush me past it, which made a real difference.

I came in already knowing some CSS but with big gaps in how I thought about components. The individual format let us skip past basics and spend extra time on the areas where I was actually weak. That felt efficient.

Honestly the hardest part was Module 6 — I hadn't thought much about how design decisions get communicated to other people. The critique sessions were uncomfortable at first but I found them more useful than any other part.

I work a full-time job so I needed something flexible. Scheduling sessions on my own terms meant I could keep learning without it becoming unmanageable. The pace was slower overall but consistent, which suited me.

Ready to start, or just curious?

Both are fine. If you're not sure which format suits you, get in touch and we'll have a short conversation about where you are and what you're trying to learn.

The program has been running since 2017 and we've had students with very different starting points. There's no test to pass before you join.
